The Sky, Sun, and Aces are all tied for the shortest possibilities, with the Sky ultimately defeating the Sun in the finals to win the championship this past season.
Nonetheless, there are important matters to address during this time of year. Key players Courtney Vandersloot, Allie Quigley, and Finals MVP Kahleah Copper are all unrestricted free agents. If Chicago decides to part ways with this group, the Sky could potentially have a chance at repeating their success. If not, a new generation of players will need to step up for the Sky.
We are currently in the heart of Chicago’s championship window as several key players are in their mid-thirties. It will be intriguing to see how long Parker, at 35 years old, plans to continue playing, especially after achieving success like winning the Chicago championship.
After the Los Angeles Sparks’ back-to-back championships in 2001 and 2002, no other WNBA team has managed to win the title twice. The Sparks are strong contenders due to the potential roster changes the Sky may face next year.
Will there be sporting bets at Wintrust Arena in the future?
Michael Alter, the owner of the team, is interested in introducing retail sports betting to Wintrust Arena, where the Sky plays. The Sports Wagering Act permits in-stadium sportsbooks at certain Illinois venues.
The problem is that The Sky is unable to apply for a sports gambling certificate because they were not included in the list of eligible groups. Alter has been fined $5,000 for lobbying Mayor Lori Lightfoot without registering.
In December, Alter emailed Amy Eshleman, the first lady of Chicago.
I am writing to officially request the mayor’s and members’ support for pending legislation that would grant the horizon the opportunity to obtain a gambling license. As we discussed previously, all of the men’s professional teams were given the authority to purchase licenses under the gaming legislation passed in June 2019, but the horizon was not included.
Lightfoot is a well-known supporter of Sky and was present at the game when they secured the championship on Sunday.
Legislative support is in favor of including the Sky despite Alter’s fine. Rep. Michael Zalewski raised the issue during a House Executive Committee gaming meeting in April. While it may not happen in time for the upcoming year, it is expected to be addressed in the future.
