Lottery Tickets Make Crappy Holiday Gifts

Written By Dave Briggs on December 15, 2022
Giving lottery tickets to children for the holidays is a remarkably bad idea. Giving them to adults simply makes for a crappy gift.

Distributing lottery tickets to children during the holidays is a highly inappropriate choice, while giving them to adults only results in an underwhelming present.

This suggests that you may want to reconsider that specific stocking stuffer.

This doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself to an Illinois lottery Merry Mega Multiplier or an officially branded National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation scratch ticket. If that’s what you’re into, and you’re 18 or older, go ahead and spoil yourself.

Try to resist the temptation to purchase lottery products like Peppermint Payday or Holiday Sparkle for others, even if you’re feeling festive and generous. Don’t give in to your inner Kris Kringle.

Problem gambling often starts with early exposure

The National Council on Problem Gambling’s Gift Responsibility Campaign emphasizes that lottery products should never be given as gifts to children, as it is not appropriate.

According to the NCPG’s website, studies indicate that individuals who are introduced to gambling at a young age are more likely to develop gambling issues later in life. This exposure typically occurs through lottery products given by adults who may not be aware of the potential risks involved.

With the abundance of gambling options in Illinois, including lotteries, casinos, online sportsbooks, horse racing tracks, and video gaming terminals, it is crucial to educate children on responsible gambling practices once they reach the legal age.

In September, Keith Whyte, the executive director of the NCPG, emphasized to Play Illinois the importance of providing teenagers with education and funding on the dangers of gambling that is equivalent to other high-risk behaviors.

Whyte emphasized that this is a significant public health concern that needs to be addressed with the same level of attention as other high-risk behaviors. He pointed out the success of educational campaigns in reducing teen smoking and drinking, highlighting the importance of a coordinated, well-funded effort by all stakeholders.

According to the NCPG, every lottery organization in North America is taking part in the fifth phase of the Gift Responsibly Campaign. A total of 63 lotteries and 53 non-lottery organizations globally have joined the campaign this year.

Besides, lottery tickets make a super crappy gift

On a lighter note, those who believe they have reached the same level of generosity as Bill Gates and Warren Buffett by giving a friend or family member a life-changing opportunity should reconsider.

While it’s possible that your gift recipient could strike it big with that lottery ticket you gifted them, the odds are much higher that they won’t.

  • The odds of dying from fireworks are 1 in 386,766.
  • The odds of being killed by a serial killer are 1 in 645,000.
  • The chances of dating a super model are 1 in 880,000.
  • The chances of being killed by a shark are 1 in 3.7 million.
  • Having identical quadruplets is a rare occurrence, with odds estimated at 1 in 15 million, primarily for women. It is unclear how the odds may vary for men.
  • The odds of dying in a plane crash on a commercial plane are 1 in 29.4 million.

The chances of winning the Powerball or Mega Millions in Illinois are approximately 292 million to 303 million to 1.

The combined chances of winning the top prize on the Illinois Lottery’s latest holiday-themed scratch-off tickets are:

  • Huge Blizzard Sale (entry fee: $10, chance to win $500) — 793-1
  • Double your holiday cash with a chance to win $500 grand prize for just $1! Odds of winning are 39,939 to 1.
  • Mega Multiplier Madness (cost $20, chance to win $1 million) — odds of 676,050 to 1.
  • The movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” has a price of $2 and a $20,000 grand prize, with odds of winning at 719,250 to 1.
  • Peppermint Payday offers a $50,000 grand prize with a cost of $3 per entry, with odds of winning at 809,000 to 1.
  • Holiday Sparkle is priced at $10 with a grand prize of $250,000, with odds of winning at 839,500 to 1.
  • Win a chance at the $100,000 grand prize with Holiday Gold for just $5 – odds of 956,400 to 1.

This means you have just given a gift that is like giving an inflated baggie.

Honesty moment #1: Giving someone a lottery ticket is a lazy gift idea that probably came to you while running errands or grabbing a drink.

Second moment of honesty: You secretly desire for the person to win and share the spoils with you. If not, let’s be real, you’re going to feel disappointed.
