Harrah’s Metropolis History
Players Island opened its doors to visitors in 1994, but underwent a rebranding in 2000 after being acquired by the global gambling giant now known as Caesars Entertainment, formerly Eldorado Resorts.
After a corporate spinoff in 2017, Vici Properties acquired the casino. Caesars, the casino’s operator, immediately leased it back from Vici.
Harrah’s Metropolis, formerly known as Players Island casino, was one of the first casinos in Illinois when it opened, founded by Players International and Merv Griffin. In 2000, Harrah’s Entertainment acquired Players International, leading to the rebranding of the casino as Harrah’s Metropolis.
Incorporated into Caesars Entertainment, Harrah’s Entertainment joined over 50 other establishments such as Harrah’s and Caesars Palace. In 2017, Vici Properties took ownership of the casino but leased it back to Caesars Entertainment, who still runs the operations.
