The Illinois Department of Human Services has launched a program called “Are You Really Winning?” designed to prevent problem gambling.

Winning at an Illinois casino or IL online sportsbook is undeniably thrilling, but the state reminds residents that it should also feel ethical.

Illinois Department of Human Services unveiled a new campaign on Wednesday to support residents struggling with gambling addiction, showing a proactive stance towards addressing the issue in the state.

The program, “Are You Really Winning?” emphasizes that no victory is worth sacrificing respect, trust, or honesty in Illinois gambling.

IDHS secretary Grace B. Hou emphasized the importance of informing Illinois residents about the signs of problem gambling in a press release announcing the new campaign. She expressed her hope that the campaign will increase awareness of the treatment and recovery options available to those struggling with gambling disorders.

The campaign will kick off with comprehensive advertising on Illinois broadcast television and radio, as well as on social media platforms. Additionally, players can visit AreYouReallyWinning.com for guidance and information.

Signs of trouble

The “Are You Truly Winning Campaign?” is raising inquiries about the emotions experienced while gambling and if one’s habits have escalated to a concerning level.

They are specifically asking if you have:

  • Have you ever experienced feelings of restlessness, edginess, or irritability while attempting to quit or reduce your gambling habits?
  • Sought financial assistance from individuals to address financial difficulties resulting from gambling.
  • Have you attempted to conceal the extent of your gambling habits from your loved ones?

If you answer yes to any or all of these questions, it indicates that your gambling behavior has developed into a problem.

According to research conducted by the non-profit consulting firm Health Resources in Action based in Boston, approximately 4% of Illinois residents currently struggle with a gambling addiction, while an additional 7% are considered to be at risk of developing one.

How to get help

The website Are You Really Winning? features a user-friendly interface that allows users to easily contact an advisor through call, text, or chat directly from the homepage.

Laura Garcia, the director of the substance use prevention and recovery division for IDHS, expressed her excitement about the launch of this campaign. She believes it will increase awareness of gambling issues and offer assistance to those in need. Recognizing the signs of problem gambling and knowing that help is always available can give individuals hope for recovery.
