The Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) released the Super Bowl betting numbers, revealing another strong showing by Illinois sportsbooks.
Illinois residents placed $60.5 million in bets on the Rams vs. Bengals Big Game, leading to $1.43 million in state tax revenue from the $9.5 million profit generated by Illinois sportsbooks. The hold rate of 15.7% was significantly higher than industry standards.
In the previous month, the total prize money for the Super Bowl game between the Buccaneers and the Chiefs amounted to $45.6 million, with participants taking home $7.66 million.
Most casinos were pleased with the outcome of the Super Bowl, as the Rams’ narrow victory was advantageous for them. Despite the Bengals being a popular sportsbook bet, there was more money on the line for the Rams spread.
Typically, the majority of control came from online betting, with 90.4% of the handle being generated in this way.
less development than anticipated?
Illinois has permitted in-person sports betting registration since April. Despite this change, there has been no apparent negative impact on overall revenue numbers. However, the $60.4 million figure for the Super Bowl may seem less impressive when compared to the previous year.
We received the December 2021 monthly revenue report, showing that the handle increased by almost 40% compared to December 2020. Despite this growth, the Super Bowl handle only experienced a 25% year-over-year increase.
Illinois residents had about two weeks to start making online transactions after Gov. JB Pritzker brought back physical memberships following last year’s Super Bowl before he halted the executive order, as per the timeline.
Starting on March 5th, we will no longer be accepting in-person memberships, which should lead to significant progress for next year’s Super Bowl.

Illinois, a prominent state in the US for sports betting, currently has a limited number of casinos. Nevertheless, this is anticipated to change by 2022.
During the latest IGB meeting, BetMGM Sportsbook was granted a license and is expected to be up and running in time for March Madness betting.
In addition, there are three websites whose identities may be disclosed in the near future. Look out for names like Bally Bet, Unibet, theScore Bet, WynnBET, Golden Nugget, and FOX Bet.
Ultimately, the sports betting odds in Illinois are hard to overlook. Nevertheless, the state’s complete potential is anticipated to be revealed in 2022 and beyond.
